Comets Take Down Defenders

Box Score The Mayville State University women's basketball team hosted Dordt College tonight in the Lewy Lee Fieldhouse. Dordt College is part of the Great Plains Athletic Conference and entered tonight's matchup 1-0 with an 86-75 win over Dakota State University on the season.

The first quarter saw the Comets gain the lead early, jumping ahead 15-7 with five minutes left after a Claire Blascziek three-pointer. It was all MSU early, but midway through the first quarter the tides began to shift with MSU turning the ball over and missing shots. Dordt College took advantage and went on am 8-0 run to end the period.

The Comets stepped up their defense in the second quarter, forcing Dordt College into tough shots and creating offense off of missed opportunities. Joelle Ertl and Karliegh Weber provided some offensive spark through the quarter to get the Comets ahead by eleven. The Defenders responded nicely at the end of the half by hitting a few shots and bringing it to a 46-60 halftime lead for MSU.

The third quarter was all Mayville State, outscoring the Defenders 25-8. Swarming defense from the Comets caused Dordt College to turn the ball over repeatedly. Naomi Torgerson led the team with six steals, Ertl was able to follow that up with five of her own. Those steals turned into points for MSU, with the Comets finding themselves leading 70-48 after the third.

The game was out of reach once the fourth quarter arrived. Both teams subbed in and out and provided playing time early in the season for their players. The Comets were able to maintain their lead late in the game, pushing until the end and coming away with a 99-73 victory.

Naomi Torgerson had a great night and led the Comets tonight with 23 points and five assists. Andi Gayner was a rebound away from a double-double, finishing with 19 points and nine boards. Claire Blascziek had 15 points, and Joelle Ertl added ten.

The Comets are back in action tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 PM against Northwestern College at home in the Lewy Lee Fieldhouse.
