Lady Comets Struggle In Loss To #3 Bulldogs

Box Score
MAYVILLE, ND – The Mayville State Lady Comets had very little rest on Saturday as they came back home to play host to the #3 ranked team in the NAIA, Concordia University from Seward, NE.  Concordia came in the game 3-0 after an overtime win the previous night against the University of Jamestown in Jamestown, ND. The two undefeated teams hit the court at 2:00 PM and the top-ranked visitors proved to be a tough team to contend with for the Comets.

In first quarter action, it was all Concordia, as they capitalized on nine Comet turnovers and turned them into plenty of points to take a good lead. The Comets were unable to stop their hot shooting from behind the arc, as they were 6-11, good for 18 of their 31 points in the first quarter alone, the score reading 31-11 in favor of the Bulldogs.

The second quarter began with a little spurt of offense by the Comets off some fast breaks, narrowing the lead to 16 for the Bulldogs. Concordia responded back with a large run of their own, going on a 29-10 scoring stretch for the remainder of the quarter, finishing the half with the lead at 63-28.  Turnovers continued to bother the Comets, while a bright spot was their 12-15 free throw shooting by the end of the half. The Bulldogs continued to drain the three-pointers, accounting for 18 of their 2nd quarter point total.

After halftime, the Comets were still struggling to find the basket, only gaining another three field goals in the third quarter. MSU battled but the Bulldogs were able to extend their lead, with the score reading 80-39 at the end of three.  The 4th quarter had a lot more fire for the Comets, as some steals and fast breaks closed the gap a little more, scoring 19 points as a team in the final 10 minutes of play. The final tally on both sides at the end of the horn was 93-58 with the visiting Bulldogs capturing a win.

Leading all scorers was Concordia's Dani Hoppes with 15. The Comets had two players in double digits, Andi Gayner and Naomi Torgerson each had 10 points.  Joelle Ertl and Kylee Heurung netted 7 each, as well. Rebounding was another huge factor in the game, as the Bulldogs won that battle 53 to 27. The Comets were able to have a high free throw percentage on the day with 19-24 made from the line.

Up next for the Comets will be on the road to Bemidji State University at Bemidji, MN on November 18th. Game time at 4:00 PM.
