Matt Bauduin was definitely having a forgettable night in the first 35 minutes against Johnson & Wales. Lucky for Mayville State, Bauduin forgot about it and played his best basketball when the game was on the line.
Bauduin finished the game shooting just 2-for-11 from the field but made his mark at the free throw line converting all 11 of his chances. Bauduin finished the game with 15 points, six rebounds, four assists and a steal.
Eric Schulstad had a great first half scoring 20 of his game high 24 points. He fouled out of the game with just under five minutes left.
Gus Kueber led the Comets down the stretch. Kueber finished with 17 points, 11 rebounds, three blocks, as well as a block and a steal.
The Comets got out to a big early lead in this game and it looked like it might be over early. A run by Johnson and Wales just before the first half ended had the Comets in a tight game through the end of regulation. Mayville State needed a big defensive stop with the game tied and seven second left on the clock. The Comets got the stop they needed and from then on, it was all Mayville State.
The Comets dominated the overtime, outscoring the Wildcats 18-4 as they cruised to an 83-69 victory. A telling stat in this game is the Comets domination at the free throw line. Mayville State converted 33-of-40 chances at the charity stripe compared to the Wildcats 8-for-18.
Mayville State won the rebounding battle 41-36, led by Kueber. Schulstad followed with seven rebounds, Bauduin and
Danny Mattson each grabbed six. Mattson played a large role in this game as he came off the bench to play 23 minutes.
Johnson & Wales was called for two technical fouls in the game. Chris O'Neal received one in the second half and Corey Puckett picked one up in overtime.
The Comets played composed down the stretch at the end of regulation and overtime which ultimately won them the game. Free throw conversion was key for the men in the victory.
